Best eSIM for Austria (2026): Saily Tested on Our Road Trip

Affiliate disclosure: Annina and I paid for the travel eSIM packages used on this trip. TechNovice is an affiliate partner of Saily and Holafly and may earn a commission on eligible purchases, at no extra cost to you. I recommend the option that fits my real-world experience and your travel needs, not the size of a commission.

My pick for the best eSIM for Austria in 2026 is Saily. Annina and I travelled around Austria from September 25 to October 11, taking our phones through cities, mountain roads, lakeside villages and occasional border areas. Annina used Saily during our trip, while I used Holafly on an iPhone 15 Pro. An original screenshot confirms that at least one Saily speed test was performed on an iPhone 12 Pro. We recorded 57 Austria-attributed mobile speed tests: 27 associated with Saily and 30 confirmed as Holafly.

Across those records, Saily's median download speed was 182.86 Mbps, compared with 160.14 Mbps for Holafly. Saily also had lower measured median latency. More importantly, we found Saily's fixed-data packages and easy top-ups better suited to the way we travel. We generally had good connectivity with both providers, but we also saw weak speeds, places without reception and complications near the German border.

Important qualification: This is an independent real-world comparison, not a controlled operator benchmark. Of the 27 speed-test records provisionally attributed to Saily, one has been individually verified against a Saily-labelled screenshot from October 7, 2026. The remaining 26 still require individual provider verification. All 30 Holafly records are marked as confirmed in our master dataset. Differences in devices, network conditions and available test evidence limit direct comparisons.

If unlimited-style data matters more to you than package flexibility, Holafly is a credible alternative. For a full provider-by-provider discussion, read my Holafly vs Saily comparison.

Austria eSIM: My quick verdict

Traveller or trip

My recommendation

Why

Most short Austria holidays

Saily

Small prepaid data packages, easy top-ups and strong performance in our recorded travel setup

One or two weeks with moderate mobile use

Saily

You can choose a fixed allowance rather than pay for an unlimited-style package you might not need

Heavy data use without monitoring gigabytes

Holafly

Day-based unlimited-style travel eSIM; check hotspot and fair-use conditions

Austria plus Germany, Switzerland or Italy

Compare Europe regional eSIMs first

A country-only package may not cover your entire route

Travellers needing an Austrian mobile number

Local SIM/eSIM or eligible voice plan

An ordinary international data eSIM does not automatically include a +43 phone number

Travellers whose existing carrier already includes Austria roaming

Check your existing plan first

Buying a separate travel eSIM may not save money

What our Austria eSIM tests actually measured

We drove through several Austrian regions, from Innsbruck and the Tyrol to Carinthia, Graz, the Wachau and the Salzkammergut. Our mobile testing included locations provisionally associated with Ehrwald, Kössen, Zell am See, Villach, Krems, Dürnstein, Melk, Linz, Bad Ischl and St. Gilgen. Locations in the consolidated dataset were matched to nearby reference places from coordinates and should not be interpreted as metre-accurate GPS proof of the exact test location.

The 57 Austria measurements span September 27 to October 8, 2026. These dates are narrower than our September 25–October 11 journey.

Saily 5G speed test in Austria showing 182.56 Mbps download, 12.10 Mbps upload and 88 ms latency.
A Saily-labelled 5G speed test from October 7, 2026, recorded on an iPhone 12 Pro: 182.56 Mbps download, 12.10 Mbps upload and 88 ms idle latency.

These figures describe our recorded test groups, not guaranteed speeds for travellers. Differences in 5G/LTE connections, devices and test servers affect comparability.

I could match 24 same-minute, same-place record pairs in the dataset. Saily had the faster download result in 16 pairs and Holafly in eight. This is useful descriptive evidence about our particular journey, but it is not a statistical proof that Saily has a faster Austrian roaming network nationwide.

The fastest Saily result: 752.11 Mbps near Villach

On September 29, the recorded Saily setup reached 752.11 Mbps download, 100.69 Mbps upload and 58 ms idle latency at a location associated with Villach. The corresponding same-minute Holafly result was 189.95 Mbps download and 71.85 Mbps upload.

That was an impressive measurement, not a realistic speed promise. It tells me our Saily setup could achieve very high throughput under favourable conditions. It does not tell me what you will get in an Austrian hotel, in a train or in another town.

We also saw strong associated Saily results of 687.04 Mbps near Zell am See and 650.42 Mbps in the Linz area. These values come from the same provisionally attributed Saily subset described above.

A useful counterexample: Holafly won in Dürnstein

Not every result favoured Saily. On October 4 in the Dürnstein area, our two matching tests showed:

Time

Saily

Holafly

15:52

36.40 Mbps

239.63 Mbps

15:54

32.45 Mbps

260.86 Mbps

Both connections were usable for everyday internet tasks, but Holafly was substantially faster there. I would not hide those results simply because Saily is my overall recommendation.

Another weak associated Saily result was 12.71 Mbps download and 0.10 Mbps upload near Heiligenkreuz on October 2. For navigation and messaging, that may still be enough; for sending a large work file or holding a video call, the tiny upload figure could become a problem.

Does Saily have good coverage in Austria?

In the places where we travelled, usually yes. Most of the journey felt uncomplicated: navigation, WhatsApp, browsing and everyday apps worked without us constantly thinking about the active eSIM.

But neither provider delivered uninterrupted service. We encountered roughly two or three places without a usable connection. One memorable example was a small mountain-pass route between the Altaussee area and Hallstatt, where neither phone could connect.

We also noticed a few situations, including underground parking garages, where Annina's Saily phone kept reception while my Holafly phone struggled. This was a real observation, not a controlled indoor-coverage test. Different devices, local roaming networks and their network-selection decisions could all have contributed.

I therefore wouldn't tell a traveller that Saily covers every Austrian mountain road or that it always has stronger reception than Holafly. Download a map for offline use before driving in the Alps, especially if you are heading away from larger towns.

Austria-only eSIM or Europe regional eSIM?

This was one of the most practical lessons of our trip. Near the German border, we sometimes had connectivity problems with an Austria-only Saily package. Switching to a Saily Europe regional plan resolved the problem for us.

We could not isolate the cause. It may have involved country eligibility, automatic network selection or a temporary roaming issue. What I would do differently next time is compare regional plans before buying for a road trip that crosses or closely follows borders.

If you plan to combine Austria with Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia or other nearby countries, check the exact list of included destinations for the specific Europe package. Do not assume every plan labelled “Europe” covers all countries equally, or that switching a plan will always fix border-area connectivity.

For a trip wholly inside Austria, a country plan may still be the more economical choice.

Saily Austria prices: Which data allowance would I buy?

One reason I prefer Saily is that I don't have to begin with an expensive unlimited-style product. I can choose a smaller amount of data and top up later if necessary.

These USD list prices appeared in the official product-page version consulted for this article on October 20, 2026: Saily Austria. The indexed page may not reflect every live checkout change. Treat them as dated snapshots, not guaranteed totals.

Saily also displayed an Austria unlimited-style option at $48.99. Always verify the selected validity, high-speed allowance, fair-use policy and final terms; an unlimited label does not itself promise limitless full-speed use.

For most Austria trips involving maps, WhatsApp, bookings, browsing and some social media, I would start by comparing 5 GB and 10 GB, not automatically buy unlimited data. The right allowance depends on what you normally use and whether your accommodation provides reliable Wi-Fi.

Annina's app showed one exhausted 5 GB Austria plan and two exhausted 10 GB Austria plans during our trip, plus Europe plans. At today's displayed Austria list prices, those three packages would total $29.97 before discounts. That is a current-price illustration, not a statement of what we actually paid: we do not have the original receipts for all three purchases.

Our usage is also a poor benchmark for a normal holiday. Repeated high-speed Speedtests can consume substantial amounts of data.

If I needed several hours of mobile video calls every day, streamed a lot of video, or relied on a laptop hotspot instead of hotel Wi-Fi, I would compare larger allowances, Saily's current unlimited offering and Holafly more carefully.

For a wider explanation of package types, read my Saily plans guide.

Saily vs Holafly vs Airalo in Austria

I tested Saily and Holafly during this trip, but did not test Airalo in Austria. So this is a practical purchase comparison, not a three-provider speed ranking.

Provider

Strongest reason to consider it

What my evidence supports

Saily

Flexible prepaid plans, top-ups, security-related app features, country and Europe coverage options

My preferred travel setup; 27 provisional Austria speed records and direct in-trip use

Holafly

Unlimited-style travel data sold by number of days

30 confirmed Austria speed records; successfully supported our three-hour, two-laptop work session

Airalo

Alternative small and large prepaid packages and regional options

Package information researched separately; no Austria field-test result from us

Local Austrian SIM/eSIM

Local +43 number or a domestic subscription

A sensible category to compare if you need local voice/SMS or stay for a long period; not directly tested here

As a dated price illustration, the Airalo Austria product-page version consulted on October 20, 2026 displayed a 10 GB / 30-day data-only package at $11.00, compared with $10.99 on the consulted Saily Austria page for the corresponding package. This does not verify either price at the moment of your final checkout. A one-cent difference does not establish a meaningful price winner; recheck the actual country coverage, network and checkout total before purchasing.

I used Holafly on my own phone and had good everyday connectivity. In Zell am See, it supported two laptops through my iPhone hotspot for approximately three hours, including video calls and website work. That was an important positive result for Holafly.

Saily also worked as a hotspot during our Austria trip, including for HD streaming. However, we did not repeat Holafly's three-hour, two-laptop work test under comparable conditions, so I cannot declare a hotspot winner.

Holafly's “unlimited” travel product is also not necessarily an unlimited hotspot product. Its own help documentation describes destination-specific hotspot rules and possible temporary local-network fair-use slowdowns. Check the exact package before planning a full working day on tethering.

Buying extra data and using the Saily app

Annina already had the Saily eSIM installed on her iPhone. During the trip, purchasing another package through the Saily app felt straightforward. We liked the convenience of keeping the eSIM profile and adding data as our needs changed.

For me, that is a stronger reason to recommend Saily than an isolated 700 Mbps speed test. I do not want to think about eSIM setup every time I drive into another region or use up a prepaid allowance.

Saily can also provide usage notifications, including an alert around 80% of a fixed data package. Actual notification settings, roaming compatibility, plan coverage and applicable security features should be checked in the current app.

Does Saily provide an Austrian phone number?

An ordinary Saily data-only Austria package does not give you a local Austrian +43 number. You can keep using WhatsApp and other internet-based messaging services with your existing account and phone number.

Saily has a separate optional US +1 phone-number feature for eligible calls and messages. That is not an Austrian phone number, and availability and capabilities should be confirmed for your use case.

If you need Austrian voice calls, local SMS verification or local registration, compare a suitable Austrian local SIM/eSIM or a product that expressly includes those features.

How I would set up an eSIM before an Austria trip

I prefer to install travel eSIMs while I still have a stable internet connection. My normal checklist is simple:

  1. Confirm that the phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.

  2. Buy a country package for Austria-only travel, or verify an eligible regional package for cross-border travel.

  3. Install the eSIM before departure using reliable Wi-Fi or another suitable internet connection.

  4. On arrival, select the travel eSIM as the mobile data line and enable data roaming for that eSIM if instructed by the provider.

  5. Review data roaming and voice/SMS settings on your home SIM separately. Leaving it active can still incur carrier charges for calls, messages or data, depending on your plan.

  6. Leave automatic network selection enabled initially; troubleshoot only if the data connection fails.

  7. Download offline maps for remote mountain roads and keep your provider's support instructions accessible.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best eSIM for Austria in 2026?

My personal pick is Saily for a normal Austrian holiday or road trip. I prefer its prepaid packages, flexible top-ups and everyday usability, and our associated Austria measurements show strong potential speeds. This is a recommendation from my own experience, not a claim that Saily is fastest or cheapest in every location and every package.

Is Saily good in Austria?

It worked well for most of our Austria trip. The 27 provisionally Saily-attributed measurements had a median download of 182.86 Mbps and ranged from 12.71 to 752.11 Mbps. We also experienced dead zones, variable performance and a border-area problem with an Austria-only plan. The Saily provider attribution in the current master still needs source confirmation.

Does Saily work in the Austrian Alps?

It did in many places we visited, but not everywhere. We experienced stretches without usable connectivity, including a small mountain-pass route near the Altaussee–Hallstatt area. No travel eSIM can guarantee a signal on every Alpine road or hiking route.

Is Saily faster than Holafly in Austria?

Saily recorded the higher median download speed in our separate measurement groups, and was faster in 16 of 24 same-minute matching record pairs. Holafly won in other locations, including two Dürnstein tests. The phones and observed 5G/LTE mixes were different, so this cannot establish which provider is inherently faster across Austria.

Should I buy an Austria-only or a Europe eSIM?

For an Austria-only itinerary, start by comparing Austria plans. If you will cross into Germany, Switzerland, Italy or other countries, compare the exact destination coverage and price of regional Europe plans first. Switching from our Austria-only package to a Saily Europe plan resolved a border-area problem during the trip, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every issue.

Is unlimited data worth it in Austria?

Only if your typical usage justifies it. Moderate navigation, messaging and browsing may fit an affordable fixed-data package; sustained streaming, video calls or laptop tethering can make a bigger or unlimited-style plan attractive. Always verify any fair-use and hotspot limits.

Can I use Saily as a hotspot in Austria?

We used a Saily hotspot for HD streaming during this journey. We did not conduct a directly comparable three-hour dual-laptop work test on Saily in Austria. Check the current plan terms and allowance if tethering is central to your trip.

Do I need an eSIM in Austria if I already have EU roaming?

Not necessarily. Some European mobile plans include Austria within their roaming allowance. Others, including many Swiss and international plans, have different conditions. Check your existing allowance and fees before buying an extra eSIM.

How I tested and what these results do not prove

People and devices: I am Nico Dudli, founder of TechNovice. My partner Annina used Saily, while I used Holafly on an iPhone 15 Pro. A documented Saily speed test from October 7, 2026, was performed on an iPhone 12 Pro. We have not yet independently verified the device model for every measurement in the consolidated dataset. We travelled together and took measurements at similar times and places whenever possible. We personally paid for our travel eSIM packages.

Timing: The Austria road trip took place September 25–October 11, 2026; the 57 Austria-attributed mobile speed records are dated September 27–October 8. This article uses the TechNovice master export dated October 12, 2026, supplied for this review.

Measurement conditions: We intended to disable Wi-Fi and VPN/security-routing features for comparison, left network technology on automatic selection, and let the Speedtest app select a server. Some measurements were made during road travel. The exported dataset does not independently confirm every setting for every test, so I do not represent it as a laboratory protocol.

Provider verification: Of the 27 Austria speed-test records provisionally attributed to Saily, one has been individually verified against an original Saily-labelled screenshot from October 7, 2026, showing 182.56 Mbps download, 12.10 Mbps upload and 88 ms idle latency on an iPhone 12 Pro. The other 26 records remain provisionally attributed, with their provider assignments not independently confirmed. All 30 Holafly records are marked as confirmed in our master dataset. The 24 same-minute comparisons should therefore be treated as exploratory rather than fully verified provider benchmarks.

Location verification: Locations were assigned using raw coordinates and approximate reference places in the consolidated master; they were not individually reverse-geocoded and GPS-certified. Place names such as “near Villach” therefore indicate area-level attribution, not an exact street address.

Network attribution: A Speedtest server, ISP label or external IP alone cannot establish which Austrian radio network served a phone. I therefore do not claim that these records prove the exact local mobile operator or roaming partner.

Scope of the comparison: Different iPhone models, different 5G/LTE mixes, variable routes, automatically selected test servers and the small number of paired records limit causal conclusions. No Airalo or Austrian local operator was field-tested in this journey.
