Quick Answer & Comparison Winner

  • Verdict: Saily wins over Airalo for most travelers thanks to lower price-per-GB rates on medium-to-large data packages, a reusable single-profile setup by Nord Security, full hotspot support, and built-in privacy tools (ad blocker, web protection).

  • Discount Code: Use verified promo code TECH at checkout to get 15% off any Saily plan.

  • Key Takeaway: Choose Airalo primarily for small 1 GB micro-packages or specialized Discover+ plans with native voice calls and SMS. Choose Saily for remote work, laptop hotspot sharing, faster 5G speeds, and better overall value.

Which Provider Is Cheaper?

The answer depends on the destination, data amount and travel duration.

Airalo can be attractive for travelers who only need a small amount of data for a short trip.

Saily often becomes more competitive for medium and larger packages, especially when a current verified Saily discount applies. I track the latest tested offers in my Saily Coupon & Discount Guide.

Why I Prefer Saily for Most Travelers

Saily was launched by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN.

Its main advantage is not simply price. Saily combines travel data with several practical app features.

Saily Advantages

  • competitive medium and large data packages

  • reusable eSIM installation for future plans

  • regional plans covering multiple countries

  • hotspot sharing supported on the standard data plans I tested

  • easy in-app top-ups

  • 80% data usage notification before your plan runs out

  • optional US phone number add-on inside the Saily app

  • built-in ad blocker

  • web protection against malicious websites

  • virtual location feature with 115+ locations

  • simple app-based installation

  • 24/7 customer support

My Saily Experience

I used Saily while traveling and working remotely in several countries.

Examples from my tests include:

  • Thailand: stable 5G performance in Bangkok

  • France: reliable connection for remote work

  • Switzerland: documented speeds of up to 515 Mbps on Salt 5G in Chur, alongside significantly weaker results and unavailable connectivity in some Alpine locations

  • Germany: usable performance during train travel, with some expected rural dead zones

  • UAE: stable connection for messaging and video calls

The exact network and performance depend on the destination, local operator and location.

Saily Disadvantages

Saily is not the best option for every traveler.

Potential disadvantages include:

  • standard country plans are primarily data-only

  • optional phone number add-on is a US +1 number, not a local number for every destination

  • installation is strongly tied to the Saily app

  • prices are not always the lowest for very small packages

  • signal quality still depends on the local partner network

Airalo: Best for Small Plans and Selected Voice or SMS Needs

Airalo is one of the most established international eSIM marketplaces.

It offers local, regional and global packages across more than 200 destinations.

Airalo Advantages

  • wide destination coverage

  • many small 1 GB and short-term packages

  • AirMoney loyalty programme

  • regional and global packages

  • selected Discover+ plans with calls and SMS

  • multiple installation options

  • 24/7 support through several channels

When Airalo Makes More Sense

Airalo may be the better choice when:

  • you only need 1 GB or a small package

  • your trip lasts only a few days

  • an Airalo package is cheaper for your exact destination

  • you want to use AirMoney

  • you require a compatible Discover+ plan with voice and SMS

Airalo Disadvantages

Potential disadvantages include:

  • larger packages can be less competitive in some destinations

  • privacy tools comparable to Saily are not built into the app

  • users may need to install or manage different products depending on the destination

  • some setup processes can require manual APN adjustments

  • calls and SMS are only available on selected plans

Price Comparison: Small vs Large Packages

Airalo can perform well on small packages.

For example, a traveler who only needs basic maps, messaging and occasional browsing may not need a 10 GB or 20 GB package.

I would consider Saily first when:

  • you need a medium or larger data package

  • you travel across several countries

  • hotspot use is important to you

  • you value Saily's built-in security features

  • the final Saily checkout price is competitive for your destination

Prices and plan structures vary by destination, so compare the final checkout price rather than assuming that either provider is always cheaper.

Compare available data sizes, regional packages and subscriptions in the complete Saily plans guide.

Hotspot Sharing: Saily or Airalo?

Both providers allow hotspot sharing on many standard plans.

Saily performed well in my own tests. I used the connection for laptops and additional phones while working remotely.

For users who regularly work from a laptop, the key question is not only whether hotspot sharing is allowed.

You should also check:

  • the total available data

  • whether the plan has speed restrictions

  • the strength of the local network

  • whether tethering is restricted by the specific plan

  • how quickly you can top up additional data

Based on my own field testing, I prefer Saily for hotspot-heavy travel because the plans I tested supported tethering reliably across laptops and additional devices. I would still check the hotspot and fair-use terms of the specific plan before purchasing.

Coverage: Saily vs Airalo

Both Saily and Airalo advertise coverage in more than 200 destinations.

For major travel destinations such as:

  • USA

  • Canada

  • Mexico

  • Europe

  • Japan

  • Thailand

  • Australia

  • Switzerland

both providers generally offer suitable plans.

Coverage alone is therefore not the most important difference.

The more relevant differences are:

  • package sizes

  • regional coverage

  • price

  • hotspot rules

  • voice and SMS availability

  • app features

  • customer support

  • local partner networks

Security and Privacy Features

All mobile data providers rely on standard cellular-network security.

Saily adds several app-level features:

  • Ad Blocker

  • Web Protection

  • Virtual Location

These features can help block intrusive ads, malicious websites and some tracking activity.

They do not replace a complete VPN in every situation.

Airalo does not currently offer a comparable built-in privacy suite inside its main eSIM product.

For travelers who value additional privacy tools, Saily has the stronger feature set.

Calls, SMS and 2FA

Most Saily country packages are primarily mobile-data plans. You can still use WhatsApp, iMessage, Signal, Telegram, FaceTime and internet-based calls over mobile data.

Saily now also offers an optional US phone number add-on inside the app. This gives you a persistent +1 number for calls, texts, OTPs and app sign-ups. However, it is not the same as getting a local phone number in every destination.

Your existing physical SIM can usually remain active for calls and SMS while Saily handles mobile data. This is often the best setup if you want to keep your normal number for banking, WhatsApp, iMessage or important verification messages.

Airalo offers selected Discover+ packages with voice and SMS functionality. This can be useful for travelers who specifically need a separate international number.

However, receiving 2FA messages still depends on the service, number type and whether the platform accepts that number. Do not assume that every virtual or travel number will work with every bank or online service.

Reusable eSIM Installation

Saily allows users to keep the eSIM profile installed and purchase additional plans for future destinations.

This reduces the need to repeatedly install and delete eSIM profiles.

Airalo's setup can vary depending on the product and destination.

Some packages may use a reusable profile, while others may require separate installation steps.

For frequent travelers, Saily's reusable app-based setup is one of its most convenient advantages.

Customer Support

Saily offers 24/7 support through live chat and email.

Airalo offers support through live chat, email and WhatsApp.

Support quality can vary depending on the issue, location and time.

Before contacting support, many activation problems can be solved by checking:

  • whether the eSIM line is switched on

  • whether mobile data is assigned to the eSIM

  • whether data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM

  • whether the correct APN is selected

  • whether the plan has activated

  • whether the device is network-unlocked

For Saily-specific issues, see the TechNovice Saily troubleshooting guide.

Which eSIM Is Better for Europe?

Both providers offer regional European packages.

If Italy is your main destination, read my dedicated best eSIM for Italy comparison, where I compare Saily, Airalo and Holafly by price, network partners, hotspot use and support.

See how it performed during my real-world Saily Europe test across seven countries.

Airalo also offers regional European coverage and may be competitive for specific data sizes or durations.

Choose based on:

  • the countries included

  • package size

  • validity

  • hotspot rules

  • final checkout price

For Europe plans, check my Saily Coupon & Discount Guide for the latest tested Saily offers before checkout.

Which eSIM Is Better for North America?

Saily is attractive for multi-country North America travel.

Its regional plan covers:

  • USA

  • Canada

  • Mexico

Because Saily promotions can change, I recommend checking the latest verified checkout results in my Saily Coupon & Discount Guide before buying.

This makes it relevant for:

  • road trips

  • business travel

  • USA and Canada combinations

  • USA and Mexico combinations

  • travel across all three countries

Airalo also offers North America and country-specific packages, so compare the final package size, validity and price before purchasing.

Which eSIM Is Better for Japan and Asia?

Both providers offer plans for Japan and wider Asia.

Saily performed reliably during my own tests in Thailand.

For Japan, compare:

  • local network partners

  • 5G availability

  • package size

  • regional versus country-specific coverage

  • hotspot rules

  • final price

Avoid assuming that one provider always has the best signal. Actual performance depends heavily on the local partner network and your location.

Which eSIM Is Better for Switzerland?

I have extensively field-tested Saily in Switzerland, while Airalo was not tested under equivalent conditions for this comparison.

My documented Saily measurements reached up to 515.19 Mbps on Salt 5G in Chur, while other locations produced substantially lower speeds. During Alpine testing, I recorded both usable high-speed connections and locations such as Meglisalp where I frequently had no usable connection.

Read my full Saily Switzerland review for the documented Speedtest results, locations and testing methodology.

These measurements show that Saily can deliver strong performance in Switzerland, but they should not be interpreted as a nationwide guarantee. Actual performance depends on location, terrain, congestion and the local partner network.

Saily Discount Codes and Checkout Verification

In my most recent checkout test, Saily coupon code TECH applied 15% off an eligible Saily country plan. Coupon eligibility can vary by plan, account, region or campaign, so I do not assume that the same discount applies to every Saily product.

I document the latest verification date, checkout evidence and current eligibility details in my Saily Coupon Guide.

How to Apply a Saily Discount Code

  1. Open the Saily website or app.

  2. Choose your destination or regional plan.

  3. Select your data package.

  4. Continue to checkout.

  5. Select “Got a coupon?”

  6. Check my latest Saily Coupon Guide for the most recently verified code and eligibility details.

  7. Enter the applicable coupon code and select “Apply.”

  8. Confirm that the expected discount appears before paying.

What About Holafly?

Holafly is a separate alternative for travelers who prefer unlimited data and are willing to pay more for it.

Code NOVICE gives:

  • 5% off Holafly travel eSIMs

  • 10% off eligible Holafly Plans for the first 12 months

For a detailed comparison, see the dedicated Holafly vs Saily article.

Final Verdict: Saily or Airalo?

Choose Saily if you want:

  • competitive medium and large data packages

  • reusable eSIM installation

  • full hotspot sharing

  • built-in privacy features

  • easy in-app top-ups

  • 80% data usage alerts

  • an optional US phone number add-on

  • a strong regional plan for North America

  • access to current tested Saily discount offers

Choose Airalo if you want:

  • a small short-term package

  • AirMoney rewards

  • selected Discover+ plans with calls and SMS

  • a package that is cheaper for your specific destination

My overall choice: Based on my own testing and the features compared in this article, I would choose Saily for most of my trips, particularly when I need hotspot use, medium-to-large data packages or Saily's built-in security features.

Airalo can be the better option for specific destinations, smaller data requirements or selected plans where voice and SMS functionality matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Saily offer calls, SMS, or a phone number?

Standard Saily plans are data-only and do not include local phone numbers, traditional calls, or SMS. However, Saily offers an optional US (+1) phone number add-on inside the app for calls, texts, OTPs, and app sign-ups. Travelers can use internet-based messaging apps (WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage) over Saily's mobile data line, or keep their primary SIM active for home carrier calls and SMS. In contrast, Airalo offers native voice and SMS options on selected Discover+ global plans.

Can I Keep My Normal Phone Number?

Yes. Most modern phones allow you to keep your physical SIM active while using an eSIM for mobile data.

WhatsApp and iMessage normally remain connected to your existing number.

Check your home carrier's roaming settings to avoid unexpected charges.

Does an eSIM Have Better Signal Than a Physical SIM?

No. Signal quality depends mainly on the local mobile network, coverage and congestion.

The SIM format itself does not improve reception. An eSIM changes how the mobile profile is installed on your device, not the strength of the local network. If you are new to the technology, my eSIM explained guide breaks down the difference between the built-in eSIM chip, the downloadable profile and the mobile network behind it.

What Saily coupon code did TechNovice verify?

In my latest checkout test, Saily coupon code TECH applied 15% off an eligible Saily country plan. Eligibility can vary by plan, account, region or campaign. I document the latest verification date, checkout evidence and current eligibility details in my Saily Coupon Guide.

Does Airalo Have a TechNovice Discount Code?

No. TechNovice does not currently have an Airalo partner code and does not receive a commission from Airalo.

Is Holafly Better Than Saily or Airalo?

It depends on the trip. Holafly may suit travelers who prioritize unlimited-style data, while I generally prefer Saily when hotspot use, flexible data packages and built-in security features matter. Airalo can be competitive for smaller packages and selected plans with calls and SMS. The best option depends on destination, data needs, current pricing and plan terms.
