No, this is not the current stable version, but it is the latest official release though. I am not sure if the BitComet development team has just hired some new guy, but they are making quite a number of releases in a short period of time with some cool features added or re-added. If they continue going at this pace, i am pretty sure more people will shift to it from other bittorent client :) or i hope

To download, click this link: Get BitComet 0.76

From the release note:

1. added Scheduler setting page in preferences dialog to adjust bandwidth depending time
2. added max/min upload rate per task settings in BT task page of preferences dialog
3. added New HTTP/FTP download button in toolbar
4. the total task number and selected task number are displayed in status bar of main window
5. fixed the bug that the BitComet main window is not activated sometimes when download URL from IE
6. fixed the bug that the function of avoid system entering suspend mode still works even when no task is running
7. improved memory allocation strategy, avoid huge physical memory usage when program running for a long time
8. fixed the bug that in 0.75 sometimes the file is not downloaded entirely when task finish

Key Improvement - I Think

As you can see, they have added the max/min upload rate per task that they have removed from the previous version. I was really pissed when this feature was missing in their previous official release. But now it's back !!!

Other than that, they even have a Bandwidth Scheduler option right now, just like utorrent, that's something nice. Looks like they are trying to copy some of the cool features other bittorrent client offers. Well, as long it makes me happy, i am okay with it :)

Lastly, it says there that they have improved the memory allocation thing, but i have tested this feature, it don't seem to be functioning in my PC. I am not sure why, but i don't seem to notice any improvement there. I personally think, the main problem that BitComet has is it's memory leak characteristic. Unless this is overcome soon, more and more people will see it as less appealing.

Overall, i personally think that the improvements made for this version is satisfying, though BitComet still have problem with memory usage, but this version shows that the developers are taking steps to solve it, just hope that it will be soon :)

Before this, i have written a few articles about Bitcomet, another bittorent client which i am really fond of. But i have been using utorrent for almost a week now, and i have to say, i am really impressed with it. Despite it's size, it offers most of the essential features a bittorrent client should have.If you don't know what bittorrent is, please click on this link to read more about it: Intro To Bittorrent.

Utorrent comes in a 170kb package, which is amazingly small compared to the other bittorrent clients (bitcomet 0.70 = 2,648KB), but small doesn't necessarily means less. With utorrent you could still download multiple torrents, set a global upload/download limits, create torrents and much more. But there are few features which i think makes utorrent stands out.

Portable

One of the advantage of being small is to be portable, this also applies to utorrent. Utorrent doesn't require any installation, you just need to click on it every time you wanna use it. Portability means that, you could load utorrent in your portable hard drive and resume your download from any PC that you could find, isn't that cool. Plus, in computers which doesn't gives you the privilege to install softwares, you could still use utorrent, that is one great advantage.

Low On Resource

Another thing that i am really impressed with utorrent is the amount of memory that it consumes. I have been running it for 3 days straight, and when i went to check how much of my RAM did it use, it was under 10MB!!!. How great is that?!. This feature makes utorrent totally suitable for PCs which are low on RAMs. You could run your utorrent and don't have to worry of a decrease in performance of your PC.

Scheduler

With the scheduler feature, you could set your utorrent to have a limited download/upload speed, which you could also set yourself, or to run at full speed or simply shutdown at certain hour(s) of the day. This feature is beneficial for people who are sharing an internet connection in a network. Sometimes, there are parts of the day that you would prefer the Internet speed not to be compromised by utorrent's activity, with scheduler, you could set utorrent to limit it's upload/download speed or shut it down during that specific time of the day, nice huh?!

These three are my best reasons why utorrent is cool. Only so much could be said, but the best way to judge this awesome software is to try it for yourself. And did i mentioned it is free. Yeah, just like all other softwares that i have suggested , utorrent is free to download and use. Download a copy for yourself now : Get Utorrent

In my previous post, i have informed you guys about the beta version of Bitcomet, version 0.73. Just as a refresher, in the beta version, Bitcomet developers has added a couple of really awaited features such as virus scan and editing the number of half open connection for Windows users. In this post, there are some screen shots of the new feature, in case you are also interested to make full use of it.

Virus Scan

With Bitcomet version 0.73, you can scan virus upon download task is complete. To do so is really simple. First of all, you need to launch Bitcomet. Then click on Options->Preferences. A menu will pop up. On the left side of the menu is a navigation bar, select 'Virus Scan' from the bar. You will end up seeing something like below:

~click for larger image~

If you see this, select 'Scan Virus Upon Task Download Finish' , if you want to scan for virus. I highly recommend it, though it may not be the best method of preventing infections, but any precaution steps that could be taken is always good.

Next what you need to do is, inform Bitcomet where the antivirus(AV) is located, there is an auto detect option available, but this may not always work (didn't detect my AV). You may do it manually, just click on the 'Browse' button, and browse to the location where your antivirus is located.

~Browse to the AV location, click for larger image~

When you have already found the AV folder, make sure you choose the right .exe file, just as a tip, normally the right .exe file that you should choose, is the file with the AV's name (e.g NOD32, the file name is nod32.exe)

Half Open Connection (HOC)

It is a bit of surprise to me that Bitcomet added the ability to edit the amount of HOC. It is a good surprise, not a bad one :-). Before this i have written a tutorial to do the same thing (to edit the amount of HOC), you may read more about HOC and the alternative method here : Read HOC. Basically, the more HOC you have, the better is the download speed.

Since Bitcomet has included this new function, it makes it easier for you to change the amount of HOC you have. But i wouldn't suggest having more than 100 HOC, even 50 is already adequate. Because, if everyone starts to have really big numbers of HOC, then the p2p network will be more insecure than it is now :-)

Anyway, i have tested the HOC editing function in Bitcomet, and from what i can tell, it is working as it should. You may also try it if you want by going to Options->Preferences in your Bitcomet, then choose 'TCP/IP Limit' from the navigation bar. A layout such as below should appear.

~click for bigger image~

Before you make any changes to the amount of your HOC, i really recommend that you set a restore point, if you are using windows 2000 and above. It is not that something bad is likely to happen, but just to take precaution steps. After that, you may change to the amount of HOC to any reasonable value (again, please keep it small :)).

So, that are the two new features of Bitcomet that i wanna share with you guys. It is not necessary or compulsory for you to change to version 0.73. I just merely wanna show how to use the features, for the ones that has installed the new beta version :)

This is some pain in the ass feature for Windows XP SP2 users. Compared to SP1 which has almost unlimited half-open connections, users of SP2 will experience slower download speed when using BitTorrent or other type of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) sharing protocol. Fortunately for you guys, there is a way to increase this half-open connections to more than 10.

OK, i have been using this application to increase my half-open connections for quite sometime now and i had no problem what-so-ever. But still, another warning from The God of Tech (i just wanna make sure that you know that's not me, right?), you need to make sure your line of defenses are really good, it need to be good from the beginning if you are a frequent user of BitTorrent.

I will continue this article assuming that you are good and anything happens beyond this, it's your damn problem ;-).

Get The Utility

First, you need to download the utility, just click the link below to go to the download page:
Download The Utility!!!

After you have downloaded it, unzipped (Unzipper) it and double click the .exe file, it should look something like below here:

~Utility Image (click for bigger image)~

Notice the cool red arrow, which i drew myself,? it is pointing the number of current half-open connections that my Windows allows. Now look the image below:

~Type Something (click for bigger image)~

Pay good attention to where the red arrow is pointing, if you are looking at the same window like above, you should notice a blinking _ , it means = type something !!!. You are asked whether you really want to change the number of half-open connections to 50, you can either type Y, for yes , C, if you want to choose any other number below 50, or N, for get the hell out of here.

I Typed Y

I choose to type Y, and if you also did the same, a window, something like below, should pop-up, requesting you to insert the Windows XP CD, click on 'Cancel'

Insert CD

Upon clicking 'Cancel' another pop-up window will appear prompting you whether you are sure about this, click on Yes.

Then just wait till the count down for the Utility to finish its work, then click on any key to end. That's all, piece of cake.

If You Typed C

If you took the road not taken, then the Utility will ask you for the number of half-open connections that you like to have, type any number between 10-50. After that, everything will be just the same as above.

#update: I just want you guys to know that, when you type 'C' , you actually can choose HOC between 10-16777214, but i wouldn't recommend having more than 100. In my opinion, 50 is already adequate enough. But then again, it is all up to you - Thanks Rob for commenting about this :-)

There is a blog post that you can read more about this EventId 4226 if you are interested : Read More. After that you can continue by changing the number of half-open connections you are going to allow for your BitTorrent client, if you are a Bitcomet user, then you can go here : Personal Bitcomet Setting , to learn how to do so.

Do you use Bitcomet as your default BitTorrent client? Do you know that there are a few tweaking of the setting that can improve the speed of your download? If you don't, then today is your lucky day. I am going to share with you my personal setting of Bitcomet Version 0.70.

My Settings- Not Yours

First of all, i need to make this one thing clear, this is my setting which is optimized for my internet speed and connection. I am not behind a network firewall (except the one in my pc) and i have the full control of my Internet network.

Secondly, warning from the God of Tech, there is no such thing as a Global International Optimized setting. I will show you how, then it is best that you experiment yourself to make your own optimized setting.

Ok, lets begin, go to Option > Preferences or CTRL+P. You should see a window like below.

Option > Preferences

Look at Global Max Upload Rate, as default it should be unlimited, which is crazy, because your Internet upload speed is not unlimited. It is important to understand that your download rate is inversely proportional to your upload rate, which if i translate that into english, it mean if you set the upload rate more than you can handle, your download rate and total internet speed is going to suffer.

So,my Global Max Upload Rate is 40Kbs, and fyi my internet speed is 6MBps, so if your internet speed is lower than mine,do the math, if it is higher, don't tell me about it. And then we have the next setting, see below.

Global Max Upload Rate (click for bigger image)

I am really a nice guy you know, so i have set that my torrent will only stop automatically when i have uploaded 100% of the file i have downloaded, hey, i am showing good example here, you better follow ;).

Stop Task (click for bigger image)

Next is Upload Rate setting for per task. Normally i would set it higher, but i download a lot of files simultaneously, so if you are like me, i would suggest these settings.

Upload Rate per Task (click for bigger image)

Lastly is the holy half-open ports, this is one the vital part of the whole setting idea. You need to first increase your allowed half-open connections to more than 10 using an Utility , but for now, just increase the number Max Half Open TCP Connection to 50, or any number between 10-50 (the bigger, the better)

Max Half Open TCP(click for bigger image)

Placement of your downloads

Well, i like my downloads to be place where i could easily find them, the default place is under Bitcomet's directory, which takes a lot of effort for me to go there, so i changed the download path to My Documents, see the examples below.

Click the button to browse (click for bigger image)

Select your preferred path

So that's it, simple, but remember, you need to do experiments yourself to get the best setting suitable for your internet speed and connection. Contact me if you have any problems understanding my simple english or you just can leave your comments.

Do you like downloading?? i am one of the download maniac, download stuffs all the time, mostly for my website. But i am not going to write about that, i am going to explain about a protocol (i think i used the right word for it) called bittorrent. What is bittorrent, well let just say bittorrent gives a far new meaning to downloading.

BitTorrent Intro

What is BitTorrent

I am not going to explain every details about bittorrent, but you can google for it ;) . To keep it short and simple, you can download massive size of files using bittorrent, it is basically a protocol which allows people to share files in a peer to peer(p2p) network, it can be anything such as videos, applications or images.Neat huh.

Lets get going, 1st you need to know, that if you just download the torrent file, what you will get is only the torrent file, it is a file with the '.torrent' extension. In order to fully utilize the true purpose of the file, you need to open it with a bittorrent client.

The Clients

There are a few of bittorrent client which you can choose from, some are better than the other, but down here are the list of the big players (i think)

Bitcomet - a c++ based bittorrent client, doesn't uses much of your RAM, full of features and it is what i use

Azureus - a java based client, it is very cool and popular, only setback is it uses much of your memory

Utorrent - small and portable bittorrent client, doesn't cost a lot of your memory and filled with features

To download, you can click on the names of the torrent, it is linked to the download site. (You need to download the torrent client to use the torrent you know)

The Files

After you already downloaded the torrent client and installed it, you only need the torrent file. Now, where can you find one? There are a few sites which host this torrent files. Below are a few example of sites which i frequently visits.

Torrentspy

Mininova

Isohunt

Torrentreactor

Piratebay

To get a torrent file, you can go to one of this websites or any other website that hosts torrent files and search for something that you want to download. Unfortunately, i can't give you any examples of what type of thing you can download using torrent, but go and have a look, you will get the idea.

After you have thought of something to download, searched for it,got the search result, look for any that match the item you want to download, found one, then you click on it. After that, try to look for a button or sign where it says something like:

Download Torrent or Download or Download This Torrent.

Yeah, you get the idea, find the key word, DOWNLOAD.

Now that you have found the download link, click on it, a window will appear prompting you to save or open the file. Choose open file, but make sure that the file is opened with your chosen torrent client.

With Firefox

With Internet Explorer

After that, your torrent client should start accepting files from the peer to peer network, with bitcomet, it will look something like below.

In case that it doesn't start, try double clicking on the file name, most of the time it will work. That's all, have fun trying, if there is any trouble, just contact me.
