Really Tiny Bittorrent Client - Utorrent
Wednesday, November 1. 2006, 06:46 AM
Before this, i have written a few articles about Bitcomet, another bittorent client which i am really fond of. But i have been using utorrent for almost a week now, and i have to say, i am really impressed with it. Despite it's size, it offers most of the essential features a bittorrent client should have.If you don't know what bittorrent is, please click on this link to read more about it: Intro To Bittorrent.
Utorrent comes in a 170kb package, which is amazingly small compared to the other bittorrent clients (bitcomet 0.70 = 2,648KB), but small doesn't necessarily means less. With utorrent you could still download multiple torrents, set a global upload/download limits, create torrents and much more. But there are few features which i think makes utorrent stands out.
Portable
One of the advantage of being small is to be portable, this also applies to utorrent. Utorrent doesn't require any installation, you just need to click on it every time you wanna use it. Portability means that, you could load utorrent in your portable hard drive and resume your download from any PC that you could find, isn't that cool. Plus, in computers which doesn't gives you the privilege to install softwares, you could still use utorrent, that is one great advantage.
Low On Resource
Another thing that i am really impressed with utorrent is the amount of memory that it consumes. I have been running it for 3 days straight, and when i went to check how much of my RAM did it use, it was under 10MB!!!. How great is that?!. This feature makes utorrent totally suitable for PCs which are low on RAMs. You could run your utorrent and don't have to worry of a decrease in performance of your PC.
Scheduler
With the scheduler feature, you could set your utorrent to have a limited download/upload speed, which you could also set yourself, or to run at full speed or simply shutdown at certain hour(s) of the day. This feature is beneficial for people who are sharing an internet connection in a network. Sometimes, there are parts of the day that you would prefer the Internet speed not to be compromised by utorrent's activity, with scheduler, you could set utorrent to limit it's upload/download speed or shut it down during that specific time of the day, nice huh?!
These three are my best reasons why utorrent is cool. Only so much could be said, but the best way to judge this awesome software is to try it for yourself. And did i mentioned it is free. Yeah, just like all other softwares that i have suggested , utorrent is free to download and use. Download a copy for yourself now : Get Utorrent

Thanks for the feedback mate, nice to have friends agreeing with what i write :-) Lately, i am using utorrent more than bitcomet, i think i am falling in love with utorrent too :-P
yup. it's easier to use than both azureus and bitcomet. save me on memory usage too (on a system with 512mb ram, I almost feel no effect from this software, unlike azureus) :)

I never used azureus before, but anything that runs using Java uses unnecessary large amount of RAM.
Utorrent uses very low amount of memory, even users with 256 RAM could use it without experiencing any drastic drop of performance :-)
